Instead of using rocks in the bottom of a pot for plants, try a coffee filter. 

 

Baking soda can enhance cleaning power of detergents.  Interestingly, rust does not tend to form as quickly on cans in the dishwasher when baking soda is added to the (granular) detergent.  Use less detergent and stretch the budget.

 

A handy tip for finger wounds:  If you are having trouble keeping a dressing on while immersing your hands in water, place a balloon over the dressing.
